Barney’s New York

Barneys is a New York institution by itself, considered the top department store in NYC. Beyond the legendary window displays which change with season, it offers the trendiest merchandise such as Alexander Wang, Comme des Garcons, Lanvin, Marni, Proenza Schouler and more.
Fred’s on the 9th floor, is a popular restaurant for ladies-who-lunch and a great people-watching spot.
Check out NYC Sample Sales for the famous bi-annual Barney’s twice yearly Warehouse Sale. These famous sales make even the socialites lose their cool, with prices at 50-80% off original retail. The sales are held in February and August at 255 West 17th st, Chelsea.

Macy’s Herald Square

Macy’s is not only a fashion institution – it’s an American icon. Visit the famed Macy’s Herald Square, the world’s largest store with 11 floors of merchandise from men’s and women’s clothing to mattresses, furniture and cosmetics. Macy’s is a part of NYC culture. Every year at Christmas kids  line up at Macy’s to sit on Santa Claus’ lap and have their picture taken. Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, which features giant floats, musical performances from Broadway shows and the Radio City Rockettes is one of the local’s favorite events of the year.

Saks Fifth Avenue

611 Fifth Avenue (at 50th st), Midtown

Occupying an entire city block directly across from Rockefeller Center, Saks Fifth Avenue has been one of the city’s  high-end department stores since it opened in 1924. The ten-floor elegant in-store boutiques of designers features all the big players including Ralph Lauren, Oscar De La Renta, Chanel, Escada, Louis Vuitton and Michael Kors. Lower-priced labels like Marc by Marc Jacobs,  Juicy Couture, Thakoon and Proenza Schouler are on the 5th floor. There are also men’s fashions, outerwear, suits and shoes.

The mother of all discount department stores is Century 21. Its the home of designer leftovers at incredibly low prices, 40% – 70% off retail prices. Everything from top designer men’s, women’s and children’s looks to cosmetics, handbags, shoes, lingerie, housewares, luggage and more. You’ll have to battle with other shoppers to get to the racks, but you won’t mind it when you discover the huge savings.

Loehmann’s was called ‘the mecca of off-price shopping.’ Prices at Loehmann’s are typically 30-65% off retail, and their famous “Back Room” is home to high-end designer merchandise at bargain prices.

Want to know one of the best things about New York City Shopping? Both Bloomingdales and Macys offer international visitors a 10% discount coupon at the visitor’s centre. Take some ID (such as your passport or driving license) to confirm you’re a visitor.

Also, you can get a 15% discount card from Lord & Taylor’s. You get it from the executive offices on the 7th floor in the southwest corner.
